Ministerial Session: Developing Community-Oriented Roads through Domestic Capacity Strengthening & Regional Cooperation
Transport is fundamental to economic growth and the delivery of public services throughout the Caribbean. Community-oriented roads are the principal form of transport for many, however significant swaths of the population, particularly in isolated communities, remain deprived of access to weather-resilient roads and year-round transport services.
This panel will share challenges and success stories as the region’s top policy-makers strive to develop inclusive road policies that leverage local talent and regional knowledge-sharing.

Master Class: Management Practices for Safer Roads (Presented by UNITAR)
Road traffic injuries claim 1.35 million lives each year with a disproportionate impact on health and development. They are the ninth leading cause of death across all age groups globally and the leading cause among young people aged between 15 and 29 years, costing governments approximately 3% of GDP and 5% in low- and middle-income countries.

Using the newly developed Road safety toolkit, this Master Class will highlight local demonstration projects implemented in different countries with a particular focus on Brazil. The toolkit is based on the premise that achieving road safety targets requires, among others, improving existing road infrastructure for the benefit of all road users, especially the most vulnerable.

14:00 Introduction to the Management Practices for Safer Roads Toolkit (20')
14:20 Successful case study featured in the Toolkit (25')
14:45 Call for expressions of interest to receive technical assistance for implementation of the Toolkit (5')

Country Panel: Delivering Climate Resilient Transportation Infrastructure & Services

Many of the region’s countries have established, or are developing operational climate resilience sector policies and investment plans, frequently with support from multilateral institutions. Which major risks have been identified? How are these initiatives beginning to impact infrastructure planning as well as disaster response strategies?
